Vascular plants of NE US and adjacent Canada
Freely branched, the stems thick, brittle, 2-4 dm; internodes 1.5-5 cm; lvs oblong to obovate, 2-6 cm, blunt or rounded, cuneate at base; dioecious; spikes solitary or few together, 1-5 cm; staminate infls of 3-6 segments, each segment with 15-60 fls; pistillate infls of 3-5 segments, each segment with 4-11 fls; fr 4-5 mm, white; 2n=28. On many spp. of trees; N.J. to s. O., s. Ind., and s. Mo., s. to Fla. and Tex. Oct.-Dec. (P. flavescens; P. leucarpum, the spelling a correctable orthographic error for leucocarpum; not P. leucocarpum Pacz.)
