Primocanes erect, ascending, or arched, rising to about 1 m or less, not rooting, beset with stiff bristles or slender, often soft prickles, the latter straight or nearly so, spreading or somewhat reflexed, mostly slender to the base, often glandular when young; primocane lvs 3- or 5-foliolate; petiole commonly as bristly as the stem; lfls usually glabrous or nearly so, but sometimes evidently hairy beneath, even velvety; infl few- to many-fld, racemiform or corymbiform, or sometimes reduced and leafy; pedicels usually glandular; fr of mediocre quality. Typically in moist or wet, low ground, but also in old fields and other disturbed habitats; Que. to Wis., s. to Va. and Ill. June-Aug.
