Tree to 15 m; twigs terete or nearly so, glabrous or thinly hairy; lfls 5-7, petiolulate, lanceolate to elliptic, abruptly acuminate to an obtuse tip; fr flat, lanceolate to elliptic, 3.5-5 cm נ8-20 mm, subtended by a minute cal usually less than 1 mm; wing extending nearly or quite to the base. Swamps and bottom-lands, mainly on the coastal plain; Va. to Fla. and Tex.
