Leaf blades 3-lobed, rarely unlobed to shallowly lobed, 3-5 cm wide. Flowers: hypanthium 7.5-16 mm, 1.5-2 times as long as sepals; sepals 5-8 mm; petals yellow, turning orange. 2n = 16. Flowering Apr-Jun. Moist banks, forests; 0-3000 m; Alta., Ont., Que., Sask.; Ariz., Calif., Colo., Idaho, Mont., Nev., N.Mex., Oreg., S.Dak., Tex., Utah, Wash., Wyo.
