Perennials, 10-30(-60+) cm (often stoloniferous). Aerial nodes proximal to first peduncle usually 1-2(-3), distalmost 1-3 internodes 1-4(-8+) cm. Leaves: basal and cauline on proximal 1/4-1/2 of plant heights; petioles 1-6(-10+) cm; blades simple or with 1-2+ lateral lobes, simple blades or terminal lobes suborbiculate or ovate-elliptic to lance-ovate, 15-55(-75) × 9-25(-35) mm. Peduncles 8-20+ cm. Calyculi of ovate to oblong bractlets 5-10+ mm. Phyllaries lance-deltate to lance-ovate, 9-12 mm. Ray laminae yellow, 15-20+ mm. Disc corollas 3.5-4.5 mm, apices yellow. Cypselae 1.5-2.5 mm, wings 0 or involute and ± corky. 2n = 26. Flowering Apr-Jun. Roadsides and other openings in woods, pine barrens; 10-500+ m; Ala., Fla., Ga., Ky., La., Miss., N.C., S.C., Tenn., Va., W.Va.
Vascular plants of NE US and adjacent Canada
Perennial with slender naked stolons or stoloniform rhizomes; stems erect or ascending, 1-6 dm, leafy below; lvs petiolate, the blade ovate to broadly elliptic or suborbicular, to 8 נ3.5 cm, often with a pair of much smaller lateral lobes at base; heads solitary or few, on long, naked peduncles; disk yellow, 7-15 mm wide; outer bracts ca 8, lance-oblong or ovate-oblong, often narrowly thin-margined; inner bracts longer and more acute, ovate; rays yellow, 1.5-2.5 cm; receptacular bracts narrowly linear, attenuate upwards; disk-cors 5-toothed; style appendages cuspidately acute; achenes 2-3 mm, the rather narrow wings finally cartilaginous and involute; pappus of 2 minute, deciduous scales; 2n=24. Woods; Va. and Ky. to Fla. and La. Apr.-June.
